The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) procured a business development consultant, SkyFox Limited, to support the winners and awardees of the very First National Sanitation Hackathon in Ghana. In 2018, the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources organized the very first National Sanitation Hackathon innovation program in collaboration with the World Bank to address some of the challenges in liquid and solid Wastes in Ghana.
The Sanitation Hackathon brought together youths in IT and software development to come together with experts to find digital solutions to solid and/or liquid waste management and to tackle the many environmental and climate change-related challenges in the solid and liquid waste sector to create maximum health benefits to people and the environment.
As part of its ongoing support (including the development of sustainable business models and financial modelling) to the hackathoners, SkyFox is undertaking a market research for the innovations to ensure effective and efficient market entry and scale-up of their innovations. So, in conjunction with the MSWR, SkyFox organized a 2-day stakeholders’ workshop at the Institute of Local Governments to elicit their inputs into the draft market survey methodology and tools. Although focusing on the funded hackathoners (NSUO and iCESSPOOL), other awarded hackathoners including DigitS (Trash Innovate), SMART team, KIJANI, and BEAMERS team also participated in the workshop, using the opportunity to further pitch their innovation and update the stakeholders on their journey towards launch and growth.
A representative of the World Bank Country Office and other stakeholders including Private Water Tanker Owners Association (PWTOA), Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers Association, and private sector marketing specialists with a background in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). In the end, it is expected the methodologies and instruments will be adapted by other hackathoners in their market research before market launch.
